Camogie Association Mum & Me Programme
Two of the Camogie Associations newly formed Camogie Clubs joined forces to participate in a combined Mum & Me Camogie Programme over a 6-week period starting on Friday 18th February and finishing on Friday 25th March. This programme was an attempt at inviting Mums and daughters within the club catchment areas to join in the Camogie club activities. The sessions took place every Friday for a 6-week period, with each club hosting bi-weekly.
Carnew Emmets of Wicklow who set up their Camogie Club in 2010 and Burrin Rangers of Carlow who established in November 2009 were the 2 Camogie Clubs that participated in this Camogie programme. There were a total of 20 mums and 26 daughters that took part in the Mum & Me Programme during the 6-week period. Not only did the two clubs involved increase their membership of Volunteer mums but also the number of club players.
The programme entailed a 1-hour session weekly, the 6 weeks was broken up into learning a one new Camogie skill each week. The first 40 minutes of the session the Mums stay at one side of the field learning the skills of camogie and learning how to coach them, while the daughters are at the other side of the pitch also learning skills and playing fun games. The final 20 minutes involved the Mums and daughters combining, with the Mums teaching the daughters the new skills that they had learned that night.
Mum & Me Skill Content
Week 1: Grip & Swing Week 2: Dribbling
Week 3: Roll Lift / Jab Lift Week 4: Face Catch
Week 5: Shoulder Clash Week 6: Strike from the Hand
This programme has proven to be a huge success with both clubs ensuring that the Mums stay involved in the running of the clubs, in a capacity whereby they either help out coaching the camogie teams or as a member of the club committee’s.
Wicklow & Carlow Local Sports Partnerships funded this particular Programme. This funding ensured that every Mum received a Mum & Me T-shirt, Hurley, Sliotar, Coaching Booklet and Fridge Magnet so they could practice the skills learned at home with their daughters. The daughters all received Camogie T-shirts and 6 weeks of FUN with their Mums!
Valerie Crean, a tutor with the Camogie Association took on the responsibility as the head tutor for the Mum & Me programme with the help of Carlow Camogie Development Officer Tracey Condell. Together these ladies did a wonderful job, making sure the mums were constantly learning and always feeling comfortable making new friends and asking questions.
Thank you must go to everyone involved in this programme especially the two respective Mum & Me club co-ordinators, in particular Linda Kenny “ Burrin Rangers” and Deirdre O‘Flynn “Carnew Emmets” for the continuous hard work in ensuring this programme was a complete success.
